About May Luk:
I have been an illustrator, a textile designer before I found expressions in clay.
After graduated in Illustration at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, I moved to New York City to work in the fashion industry. I attended Fashion Institute of Technology and Cooper Union for additional computer and small business management courses. I have also studied Chinese paper cutting and caligraphy. It was during this time I discovered pottery, and began dabbling as a hobbyist.
I started to get my hands into clay when living in London, I studied ceramics at Kensington & Chelsea College and Glasgow School of Art. I loved the medium, the combination of art and science, hours of experimentation mixing glaze and colors, each resulting piece a series of creative decisions and technical endeavors. I found it an ideal way to use my background in illustration, producing pieces that have an emphasis on image making and graphic decorations.
I returned to New York in 2007 to continue my business and moved into a studio in Brooklyn where I now reside.
I make functional domestic ware in stoneware and porcelain. My influences are textile motifs, Chinese paper cut, blue and white pottery, vintage advertising, contemporary illustration and typography.
My work is made to be used and enjoyed. Every piece has a personal story behind it. Using handmade craft contributes to the uniqueness of one's surroundings. Eat happy and be well!
